Off to Cork City we go this morning. It is a relatively long drive – over two hours – but it’s on major roads so it was easy. We were able to find the B&B without too much trouble. It was right after the train station and we were able to park right out front. This left us with about ten minutes’ walk to town. The first goal for the day was to find out about hurling tickets. We know that there was a match that night but didn’t know how to get tickets. Our first stop was at the travel office. They gave us details on where the match was and what time it started. They sent us to a sports store to buy the tickets. Unfortunately, that store did nothing with tickets so they sent us to another store. The results at the second store was much like the first. We continued to wander until we found an HMV store. Unlike the one in London which set us up with soccer tickets, this HMV came up dry. They told us, however, that we should be able to get tickets at the gate.
Since we had a couple of hours to kill, we wandered through the Shandon section of town to St. Anne’s church. The church’s claim to fame is that the clocks on the four sides of the steeple all show different times, giving it the name “Four Faced Liar.” We didn’t find this to be the case, however, as the times shown was at best a minute. After the church we headed back to the room to rest prior to the game.
The walk to the stadium took us the better part of a half-hour but we were still able to get seats. It was an interesting match during which we tried to figure out what was going on. Cork took an early lead but then Kilkenny put on a show, winning by eight points.
Our first stop on our way back to the city was O’Flarety’s. This was a large, crowded pub that played dance music. We couldn’t find a place to stand that wasn’t in the way so we drank up and moved on. The next and last stop was the Black Bush. We met two interesting guys from England there who told us all about their recent trip to the States. We learned that they poured gas on the water and lit it in Florida. They also spent four days in prison in PA for some reason that they wouldn’t elaborate on. We bet on the Nazer fight which ended quickly giving Steve two rounds. We ended up closing the place and heading home.
