Our last morning in Cork City. Steve has had enough bacon and sausage so he decides to go with the eggs alone. We get an early start to Killarney…well early for us. The B&B we were staying at was on the other side of town but we found it without too much difficulty. We were greeted by the host with some bad news. The people who were in the room we were to use went out for the day, leaving their bags in the room. It seems they decided to stay another night without bothering to notify the owners. Our host apologized and found us a room nearby. All we needed to do to get there was take a right, a right and a right. We learned later that these were typical Irish directions. It was easy enough to find though. The owners were the nicest so far. They greeted us with coffee and cookies and gave us directions to the ring of Kerry which was our destination for the day. The ring was a beautiful drive along the edge of the Iveragh Peninsula. We took tons of pictures, valleys and shoreline.
After all of the driving we decided to get some chow so we walked back into town. While I talked to Aasma, Steve found O’Leary’s. We had a good meal and headed out to find the pubs. We walked up Plunket St. looking for Yer Mans which was one of the “Let’s Go” books recommendations. After two trips up and down the street we chose to find another pub. We settled for Failte which promised live music nightly at 9:00. They lied. There was nothing else going on so we moved on. The next pub was Jug O’ Punch. Great name. Not such a great pub. There were kids inside. Yuck! Next was Buckley’s where we heard some good traditional music that the barman made fun of. I guess if you heard the same stuff every night you’d get sick of it too. We were drawn to the next place, Kelly’s Corner, by the “Drinking Consultants” sign. The bar was a disappointment though. There was a lot of American stuff – flag, Harley, etc. They also served Bud on the rocks to girls who looked like they were 16. Our next stop was McSorley’s which must be pretty popular since it was mobbed. There was time for one more so we popped into the pub portion of the Strawberry Fields restaurant which turns out to be Yer Mans which we couldn’t find before. The book’s recommendation of the place was spot on. The place was great. It had a great atmosphere and we’re told it is the only pub licensed to sell Guinness in jam jars. While we were drinking our pints we were talking to a couple about our next destination, Dingle. They gave us a suggestion for a route called Conner Pass that they said was beautiful.
