Ireland Trip – Day 15 (London)

The alarm came much too quickly for both of us, especially since neither of us slept well. Not a good start to a day that was going to suck anyway. We made it to the ferry in plenty of time and it left at 6:40 as scheduled. We moved around a little bit until we found seats away from loud children. The arrival in Holyhead was a little late but still gave us time to make the train. We were able to get seats together and the train left on time.

During the train ride we decided to see if we could get a flight out today instead of tomorrow so once we arrived in Euston station we hopped on the Tube for Heathrow. It was an often crowded hour-long train ride to the airport. Once there we fought through the crowds to the BA ticket counter where we found out that there was no space on the remaining flight to Boston. They didn’t expect any standby passengers to be allowed on either. The lack of seats was cause by a cancellation earlier in the day. We now needed to find a place to stay so we headed to a booking counter we had noticed on our way up from the train. We told the clerk that we wanted a hotel near the airport. She gave the two phones a workout – at times using both at the same time – while finding us a room at the Quality Hotel. In order to get to the hotel we needed to take a shuttle for outside Terminal 2. Unfortunately we were in Terminal 4 so back to the Tube for a ride that was longer than either of us expected. Once at Stand 12 outside of Terminal 2 we waited for over a half-hour before the private shuttle arrived. Getting off of the airport grounds was quite an adventure. We seemed to be doing nothing but going in circles.

The hotel looked pretty nasty from outside but was quite clean inside and the hotel staff was friendly and helpful. After checking in and arranging for transportation to the airport in the morning, we headed to the room to relax. We wanted to eat right away but the dining room wasn’t open until 7:00. Room service – toasted ham and cheese sandwiches and fries – will have to hold us until dinner. After our snack we relaxed, napping when possible, until after 8:00. Since it been all of three hours since our last meal we walked downstairs to the dining room for a full dinner. After another good feed we watched some tele before retiring for the evening.
